Legislative Call to Action to Defend Medicaid
Our Mission
Membership is open to all Registered Nurses who live or work in either Washington or Frederick Counties.
District 8 includes Frederick and Washington Counties and is one of the nine constituent districts of the Maryland Nurses Association (MNA). MNA is the only state-wide, non-profit, multipurpose professional membership organization for Registered Nurses in Maryland. The primary purpose of MNA is to provide direction and a voice for the profession of Nursing in Maryland.
District 8 Officers and Board Members welcome all current and prospective members to participate in meetings and events to engage in professional development, networking, advocacy, and collaboration to increase Nursing’s collective visibility, diversity, and voice.
District 8 typically meets online at 7:00 PM on the third Tuesday of the month. The end of the year is celebrated in person at a holiday dinner meeting. All Nurses are welcome to attend District 8 meetings and events.
Vision Statement
District 8’s vision is to offer an environment for networking and supporting the professional education and career growth of our members.
Opportunities for Practice
District 8 has a variety of healthcare practice settings for Nurses. Each county has a large, progressive, acute care hospital with expanding healthcare programs and services. In addition, there are health departments, school Nurse programs, military health programs at Fort Detrick, long-term care facilities, hospice programs, an inpatient psychiatric hospital, and a state-owned chronic disease hospital.
Nurse Education Programs in District
Each county has an associate degree Nursing program affiliated with the community.
Hood College, located in the city of Frederick, has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Frederick Community College offers the Associate-to-Bachelor dual enrollment option in partnership with Towson University, Frostburg University, and the University of Maryland Schools of Nursing. Hagerstown Community College (HCC) Nursing program has an agreement with the University of Maryland School of Nursing to provide a BSN at HCC. Towson University has a BSN program in Hagerstown. Advanced Nursing degree programs are also offered through outreach programs by several university programs.
Support for Advanced Education
The District 8 members established a scholarship fund with The Community Foundation of Frederick County for Nurses living and/or working in Frederick or Washington Counties. The purpose of this scholarship fund is to support Nurses who are pursuing an advanced degree in Nursing. To date, five Nurses from District 8 have been supported through the scholarship fund in their journey to complete their baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Nursing.
