Prospective Members,
Nurses are the only people that can truly provide a nurse's perspective and your voice representing the nurses in Southern Maryland needs to be heard. Currently our Southern Maryland tri-county membership represents < 5% of MNA membership. We have the opportunity to grow, get involved, and make a difference for nursing in Southern Maryland and throughout the State.
I encourage each of you to join me in an effort to empower nurses in our roles as patient and nurse advocates. Take time to become an active member. Consider participating in key positions. Talk to your co-workers about joining with you. The future of our profession rests with us.
Best Regards, Liz Benson
Highlights of 2006-2007
District 9 is home to the College of Southern Maryland, 4 community hospitals, numerous long-term care facilities, and is one of Maryland's fastest growing regions. We are committed to offering nurses in the Southern Maryland area topics of interest that are professional, timely, and pertinent to nurses of all disciplines.
We had representation at the 103rd MNA State Convention and our members played an integral part in planning and executing 2007 Lobby Day and Nurse's Night in Annapolis. We had several letters to the editor published and county and state elected officials attended our local events.
As in previous years, we were again able to present a local nursing student with a $1000.00 scholarship. Our major fund raising efforts are the Silent Auction and 50-50 held during the May Dinner.
Recognition of Achievement:
The following recognition of nursing achievement awards were presented at the Annual Awards Dinner in May:
2007 Nurse of the Year Award - Paula M. Luskus, RN, BSN
Jo Anne Zwick Caring Award - Peg Cocimano, RN, CCRN
Grace E. Brown Nurse Educator Award - Betsy Tyer, RN
