Maryland Nurses Association
The Voice for Maryland's Nurses

The Maryland Nurses Association (MNA) has worked for over 100 years  to be responsive to the changing needs of nurses while upholding the standards of excellence. Nationally, MNA has partnered with colleagues across the country to address issues around the Nursing workforce, education and the work environment.  We are at the forefront of promoting best practice standards by addressing educational, economic, ethical and legal issues that affect our profession.  We are well recognized for our ability to influence change.  We are the voice for nursing across the state and represent nursing in Annapolis at the legislature.

When you join the Maryland Nurses Association, you also become a member of the American Nurses Association, The Center for American Nurses ("The Center") and your local district for the same fee.  Also, as a member you can attend any program in any district at the member rate and have access to the Members Only section of this website.  If you did not join on line, and want access to the Members Only site, simply contact MNA at info@marylandrn.org  We hope you enjoy this website and visit it often.  If you have any questions about the Maryland Nurses Association, please call the office at (410) 944-5800 or you may contact me rmortimer@son.jhmi.edu.

Association Mission

The Maryland Nurses Association promotes excellence in the nursing profession with a culture of camaraderie, mentoring, diversity, and respect for colleagues. We provide programs and educational development for continued personal and career growth. As the voice for nursing in Maryland, we advocate for policy supporting the highest quality health care.

Association History

The Maryland Nurses Association was founded on December 14, 1903, as a state society of nurses called The Maryland State Association of Graduate Nurses. In response to an invitation from a preliminary committee, about 400 nurses assembled in the Arundel Club Hall in Baltimore and began framing the constitution and purpose using the following words, "The object of this Association shall be to procure State registration; to elevate and maintain the standard of nursing and to promote good fellowship among all nurses." Miss M.A. Nutting served as the first president of the Association.

Immediately after being formalized, The Maryland State Association of Graduate Nurses set itself at once to accomplish the first of the objectives for which it was created, namely procuring of State registration for Nurses. Right away the Association was involved with legislation, a focus that is a key area of concentration to this day. A bill was put forward to form a Board of Nurse Examiners. The legislation was supported by the legislature without opposition, alteration or amendment from the original draft. It was signed on March 25, 1904, by Governor Warfield. This body evolved into the current Maryland Board of Nursing.

The Maryland Nurses Association has served as the voice for nursing in the state of Maryland for over a century, working hard for the practicing nurse.
