The Maryland Nurses Association’s Continuing Education Provider Unit consists of a Lead Nurse Planner appointed by the Board of Directors (BOD) and District Nurse Planners representing each of the Association’s eight (8) districts. The Provider Unit functions to:

  1. Establish a communication mechanism that facilitates collaboration with the Maryland Nurses Association Practice and Education Committee to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate continuing educational programs.

  2. Collaborate with District Nurse Planners to support continuing educational programs that are compliant with the criteria established by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC COA).

The Maryland Nurses Association (MNA) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation, signifying that educational activities that award contact hours offered through MNA meet national standards for quality continuing nursing education.

Continuing nursing education is an activity designed to enrich the nurse's knowledge of and contributions to quality health care and the pursuit of professional career goals (ANCC, 2015). Continuing nursing education does not include activities intended to assist the nurse to acquire, maintain, and/or increase the level of competence that may be required to fulfill responsibilities specific to the expectations of an employer.

MNA encourages and supports the nursing districts when offering continuing educational activities. Awarding contact hours is one of the most valued tangible benefits of MNA membership.

Kathy Martin, DNP, RN, CNE is the Lead Nurse Planner for the MNA Provider Unit.

Note to District Nurse Planners for the Maryland Nurses Association's Districts: Please contact Kathy Martin when planning an educational activity and for support during the implementation and evaluation phases of the activity.
